BÖHLER-UDDEHOLM produces its special steel products at locations in Europe and America: Kapfenberg, Bruckbach and Mürzzuschlag (Austria), Wetzlar (Germany), Hagfors (Sweden), Sumaré (Brazil), South Boston (Virginia, USA) and Walnut (California, USA).

The company with the largest production volume is Buderus Edelstahl GmbH in Wetzlar, followed by Böhler Edelstahl GmbH in Kapfenberg, Villares Metals S.A. in Sumaré and Uddeholm Tooling AB in Hagfors. These four companies melt special pre-sorted scrap at temperatures of roughly 1,600° Celsius (liquid phase) for transformation into specialty steel.

The plants in Wetzlar, Kapfenberg, Hagfors and Sumaré are equipped with electric arc furnices, while induction ovens are available for smaller quantities. Böhler, Uddeholm and Villares Metals also operate electro-slag re-melting units to guarantee the high purity and quality of these special grades, and both Kapfenberg and Sumaré are equipped with vacuum arc re-melting units.

The liquid melt is cast into ingots, which are then hot rolled in state-of-the-art multi-line rolling mills (Kapfenberg, Sumaré) or forged with high-performance machinery (Wetzlar, Kapfenberg, Hagfors, Sumaré).

The core aggregates for the production of forged components are the world’s two largest screw presses, which have an impact force of 35,500 and 31,500 tons, respectively, and are located at the Kapfenberg site as well as two fully automated extrusion lines at the Wetzlar site with 8,000 and 10,000 tons of extrusion force. The machinery equipment also includes additional forging and trimming machines as well as induction heating furnaces and several milling machines to handle the mechanical finishing.

The aggregates produce technologically demanding forged products in small batches to meet customer requirements and in accordance with a comprehensive ISO 9001-certified quality assurance system. The highest quality standards are essential for establishing a reputation as a reliable partner – for example, to the aircraft industry.

At the Wetzlar site there is also the production of hot rolled and cold rolled strip.

The production companies supply the Group’s worldwide sales organization with a wide-ranging product line, giving BÖHLER-UDDEHOLM a local presence in all industrial centers of the world. This also applies to the emerging markets in Asia, South America and Eastern Europe. The sales companies are able to deliver standard products to customers within 24 hours.

The warehouses of the sales companies are furnished with modern equipment. Computer-controlled saws cut the materials (blooms, bars, wire) into the desired dimension, and special equipment is also available for surface processing. Well-trained, experienced and highly motivated specialists guarantee on-site customer satisfaction.
